NEW REALITIES IN DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
New Realities
Basing ourselves on this year’s curatorial concept [7P], we want to address photographers who reflect real situations with their photographs. However, “every reflection on the real always contains something fictive”, according to Urs Stahel, curator of the Fotofestival in 2015.
The 2015 Portfolio Review is to be underlain by an expanded concept of the documentary. It is also consciously addressed to photographers who questioningly, searchingly and experimentally use contemporary forms of artistic photography and create subjective realities rather than “illustrations of the real”.
19 September 2015 is the date of the Portfolio Review in Mannheim’s Jungbusch district. The Portfolio Review offers an opportunity for concentrated dialogue between photographers and selected photography experts and is aimed particularly at students of photography, art and design as well as at artists and photographers.
Participants will show the experts their works during intensive individual consultations. These consultations offer the opportunity to receive feedback and new impetuses and to generate important contacts for continued development.
Experts’ Professionalism
International experts from all areas of photography will provide advice during the portfolio presentation and dispense tips on forming a network. Applicants can find out about their respective consultative focuses in the
REVIEWER area. The experts will also form an expert jury and choose the favourites that will be shown in a dedicated exhibition throughout the Festival’s duration at the Heidelberger FORUM für KUNST.
Intensity of Consultations
The consultations are scheduled to last
30 minutes. This therefore offers participants the opportunity to discuss with the experts in detail and benefit from their experience in the respective consultative focal point. It is possible to apply for several advisory consultations.
Practical Orientation
We were able to gain three of the photographers participating in the Fotofestival as experts for the 2015 Portfolio Review: Henrik Spohler, Simone Demandt and Lukas Einsele. This offers the opportunity to receive practice-based feedback from established, artistically active photographers.
Exhibition of Favourites
This year once again, outstanding positions will be appointed by the experts. A selection of their works will be shown in a virtual gallery on our homepage. In addition, the three best participants will receive the opportunity to present their works to a wide audience in a standalone exhibition, which will take place in parallel to the Fotofestival’s duration at the Heidelberger FORUM für KUNST.
